The Church of England marks the death of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh

At times of national importance the church often brings people together as they reflect and express their feelings and faith.  Following the death of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh on Friday morning we will open the church for private prayer and reflection until the day of the funeral.  If you wish to use the church during this time please note the Covid-19 precautions in place.

If you would like to contribute to the Church of England online book of condolence please click the image of Prince Philip above and follow the instructions on the page that subsequently opens.

The Bishop of Blackburn, Rt Rev. Julian Henderson has issued the following short initial statement on the death of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. "We heard today the sad news of the death of The Duke of Edinburgh. Prince Philip was an incredible public servant, retiring only from public duties late into his 90s. He was also a very successful naval officer, an accomplished sportsman and a devoted husband over seven decades. "His desire to reform British Industry to benefit the workers, his love for the outdoors which led to the award given in his name, and his support of the Church will be things which we will remember and have impacted the lives of many people. "Our prayers must now be for Her Majesty the Queen, as hers have so often been for us, and for the wider royal family as they deal with this personal loss very much in the public eye.”

Coming to church

The Bishop now requires all churches to reopen after the Directors of Public Health in Lancashire indicated they agree congregational worship can restart and the ‘stay at home’ guidance withdrawn from this weekend.  However, we continue to be vigilant and would ask you to register your attendance, use hand sanitiser; wear a mask and remain two metres apart from others at all times.

Singing The rigid restriction on singing is now relaxed.  The new rules are as follows:

  • Indoors: - small groups of singers will be allowed to perform, or rehearse for performance, only where essential to an act of communal worship. This should be limited to as few singers as possible, with social distancing being maintained at all times. Communal singing should not take place.
  • Outdoors, in the grounds or the outside space of a place of worship: When communal worship takes place outdoors, the congregation may join in with singing, and should follow the principles set out in the performing arts guidance. This includes ensuring that congregation members follow social distancing rules. Social contact limits apply, meaning that households, support bubbles or groups of 2 must not mingle. Communal singing in other public open spaces should not take place.  We are very pleased about this as it will enable us to continue with our rich liturgical tradition and look forward to welcoming the full choir back very soon.

  • Support during Coronavirus Isolation
